Hong Kong International Film Festival
I'm watching 19 films at the HKIFF. So far, $9.99, Machan, and Antique are my favourites for this year and only 4 films really put me to sleep and I'd had doubt about them before buying the tickets so I guess my judgment is not so bad this year~
23 Mar 2009 You Will Be Mine - Just another boring French film trying to drag out one point for 96 minutes
23 Mar 2009 $9.99 - Stunningly fantastic! Real and surreal; warm, dark and unsettling at the same time
24 Mar 2009 Machan - When I knew that the filmmaker was a producer of Full Monty, I knew why this film is so good
30 Mar 2009 Romeo* Juliet - A good premise let down by a very weak script and some unconvincing acting
03 Apr 2009 The Country Teacher - Much better on the big screen. Great feel of the countryside
04 Apr 2009 Maradona by Kusturica - A pleasant surprise. The cartoon sequences were so funny, and it's nice to see his 2 daughters.
05 Apr 2009 The Baader Meinhof Complex - Waste of a good story. The film lacks focus. So many points that should've been driven home are given just a split second. The development of the characters is wonky. If you don't know the history, you'd scratch your head. If you do know, you'd scratch your head too over the gaps and glossing over the director has chosen.
05 Apr 2009 Antique - Visually gorgeous, wonderfully acted, well-paced, smoothly and creatively directed - all in all a very satisfying treat
05 Apr 2009 Country Wedding - Surprisingly entertaining, as I'm not a fan of Dogme. The scenery is always a bonus.
06 Apr 2009 At Stake - It shocked me to the core to know that some women in rural Indonesia are working as hard labourer by day and prostitutes by night charging only $1 for full service (I assume it's US dollar but still). It's a pity only a handful of people went to see this selection of short films.
08 Apr 2009 Baptist U Selections - Many of the short films are visually beautiful. I just wish the scripts had similar sophistication.
08 Apr 2009 Of Time and the City - I fell asleep, woke up and fell asleep again. Never had the audience been so reluctant to clap at the ending.
09 Apr 2009 Ghosted - See above
10 Apr 2009 Chandni Chowk to China -
10 Apr 2009 Hunger -
11 Apr 2009 Idiots and Angels -
11 Apr 2009 Zift -
12 Apr 2009 No Subtitles Necessary: Laszlo & Vilmos -
13 Apr 2009 Ghajini -
Still 6 films to go, I have high hopes that the 2 Indian films Chandni Chowk to China and Ghajini will be entertaining, and the rest... I don't know, I'll just wait and see. After all, I don't remember what they're about anyway.
In between waiting for the next screenings, I finished translating a couple of short fics at the Starbucks. Now I'll just have to wait for the permissions so that I can post them. Fingers crossed they'll come soon.
